What should you watch for when driving in Austria?
Toll section
Tolling system
Austria operates the GO-Maut, a distance-based system using microwave technology. Customers can use an EETS OBU from Shell or the Go-Box from ASFINAG to pay the tolls in Austria.
Roads
In Austria, tolls are charged on:
Motorways (Autobahnen): All motorways require a toll, either through a vignette for light vehicles or the GO-Box/EETS Box for heavy vehicles.
Expressways (Schnellstraßen): These roads also require a toll.
Special Toll Sections: Certain tunnels and alpine passes have additional tolls due to high construction and maintenance costs. Examples include the Tauern Tunnel, Gleinalm Tunnel, and the Brenner Pass.
For more detailed information, you can visit the ASFINAG website.
Vehicles
All vehicles above 3.5 tonnes are required to Register for an OBU.
Passenger cars and vans up to 3.5 tonnes are required to buy a Vignette.
On-board unit
For non frequent users:
GO-Box: An On-Board Unit (OBU) called the GO-Box is mandatory for all vehicles subject to the toll. It uses microwave technology to communicate with toll gantries and automatically deducts the toll.
For frequent users:
We recommend to use a Shell EETS Box for all customers who traveling through multiple European countries.
Following Shell EETS OBUs can be registered for the Austrian Toll: Toll4Europe, Telepass SAT & Telepass K1, Axxes B'Moov
Categories of users
Registered: EETS One Box from Shell or Go-Maut Box
Non-registered: Vignette for light vehicles
